Woodpeckers

Woodpeckers are known for drumming and pecking that can be heard all throughout the forest. They have hard pointed beaks and thick skulls made for hammering which in turn make cavities for them and other bird relatives. They drum for territory during mating season. Woodpeckers are good family members, both the male and female feed the young. They have long tongues which can collect sap or insects and are great climbers on trees. Woodpeckers are a unique bird and some are said to contain thunder power. A Northern Flicker saved a young Sitting Bull and woodpeckers can carry special powers. Below are the many woodpeckers you may encounter all throughout the midwest.
