Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum)
Porcupine quills have been used to decorate Lakota items before the age of the bead. Porcupine are found throughout the Black Hills and Northern Minnesota. Porcupine live up in trees where they consume bark and needles. They are great climbers and can protect themselves from much larger predators by using their tail and backside for defense.
